Glastonbury Festival which takes place at Worthy Farm in Somerset is arguably one of if not the biggest and most notable music festivals in the world. Known for its eclectic lineup and taking place every June, it has become a staple of music culture with more than 200,000 music lovers flocking to the area yearly.

When Was Glastonbury Founded?

It was originally founded by Michael Eavis with the first festival taking place in 1970. T-Rex was the headline act after the original headline band, The Kinks cancelled. The first event saw around 1,500 guests attend and since then the farm has seen more than 10 million spectators walk through its gates!

Why Is Glastonbury Having A Year Off?

So, given that the festival is so popular and guarantees a sell-out pretty much every year, why is it deciding to take a break in 2026? According to the organisers, including Michael Eavis’ daughter Emily Eavis who now takes the lead in festival planning, they are having a year off to give the land time to rest. This makes sense given the amount of people who walk across the land each year. But, you may ponder why that is not the case for other festivals which take place on the same land each year. Worthy Farm is still a working farm with farming activities still happening across the year hence why they need to nurture it.

Glastonbury 2027

The last fallow year was in 2018 with Eavis insisting that it is always even more special when it returns after a year off. Also, it could even return as the biggest one yet with some huge names on the lineup for 2027, who knows, maybe Oasis could top the bill?
