Liverpool is known for creating infectious indie and a new song to add to that collection is “Sorry I’m Late, I Didn’t Want To Come” by The Wombats. The Wombats for me are one of those bands who you can pick up after some time away from listening and suddenly get really hooked on them again, and this track is no exception.

Catchy Start From The Wombats

This track starts as it means to continue with a rhythm consisting of a foot-tapping beat and a stand-out bass lead. The vocals from frontman, Matthew Murphy soon emerge in the mix and he grips me with his unique tones. The band have always had a distinct youthful sound and it is refreshing to hear them exploring this further as opposed to changing their sound and style as they mature as artists.

Meaning

The track has a very carefree vibe but the lyrics are much deeper as it steps into themes of alienation and social anxiety. Moreover, Matthew speaks candidly about not necessarily just hating one person but simply not enjoying being around anyone. However, he admits that he is the problem but there is a feeling of powerlessness and despair, often struggling to overcome the issue despite an ambition to do so.

Conclusion

Overall, “Sorry I’m Late, I Didn’t Want To Come” is a really pleasant offering from Liverpool indie gents, The Wombats. It has a pop undercurrent while keeping true to the band’s trademark indie style. It is also just a preview as to what to expect from their new album, “Oh! The Ocean'” dropping next year. It will be the band’s sixth album.
