Content Guide
Liverpool indie favourites, The Wombats return with “My Head Is Not My Friend”, track 6 from their new album, “Oh! The Ocean” which will be out on the 14th February, 2025.
Ear-worm
This new release by The Wombats, produced by John Congleton starts with a gradual build-up, an indie-driven introduction that takes us forward with a mouth-watering bass riff synergising well with a rapid drum rhythm. The track gets more potent as it progresses with the introduction of softly rung guitar chords. The song becomes an earworm in the chorus with a catchy vocal melody gripping to the ears like chewy to the bottom of a boot. Also, it features an explosive final section.
Meaning (My Opinion)
Matthew Murphy speaks about inner conflict. He also candidly reveals how hard it is to deal with the chaos of living through modern times. Moreover, the phrase “my head is not my friend” describes how it feels to be stuck in your own thoughts, struggling to feel calm and at ease. The references to short-term distractions, like drinking whisky in a bubble bath or pushing people away, show that the singer is trying to avoid dealing with deeper mental problems. This makes it seem like he is stuck in a loop of hurting himself and is always looking for comfort but never really finds it.
At the same time, the song talks about wanting to escape and wanting peace. In the chorus, Matthew says he would give up everything for “one peaceful day,” which shows how much stress he is under at the time of writing.
Overall
The Wombats explore with their trademark sound and push the boundaries of what they have delivered before. Also, they give us a good idea as to what to expect with their new album; we are in for a treat!
