The Lathums hit the jacket with their new song, “Stellar Cast”. Yes, indie boys and girls, this is one you are going to love. It is their first release since “No Direction” which came out in July 2024.
Hailing from Wigan, the four-piece remind me why indie-rock never gets tiresome and they reinvent themselves with a track which is ticking all of my boxes this chilly early November morning.
Special and Unique From The Lathums
The track from The Lathums starts with the sound of thunder. A salient guitar lead then rises alongside a shuffling drum cadence. Before you know it, all the guns are blazing and by this point, you will be struggling to control your body from moving to the rhythm. There are reggae undertones emerging which is rather special and unique. This also matches the lyrics from frontman Alex Moore who speaks about not being able to see past some “Jamaican ale” he is drinking. Apparently, the lyrics were written after one of the band’s early gigs at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds.
Influences
One thing The Lathums do so well is delivering punchy and catchy choruses. They do that here on “Stellar Cast” and Alex sings in top gear as the music behind him rattles the speakers for all the right reasons. There are many influences which come to mind for me while listening, I hear Milburn vibes here and there and also hints to indie giants Arctic Monkeys.
Meaning Of “Stellar Cast”
Alex is delving into themes of Desire and Infatuation in “Stellar Cast”. He explores intense feelings of attraction. Also, the references to alcohol, symbolise how his mind is confused and he struggles to navigate the obsession he has for this mystical girl. Also, in the chorus there is a sense of surrender to the emotional experience, recognizing that some feelings are unavoidable with Alex claiming that even if he could forget about this girl, he wouldn’t.
