American siblings and rock band, The Haunt smash through the industry noise with their new single, “Going Under” which is out now and sits alongside “Bad Omen”, “Masochistic Lovers” and “New Addiction”. For alt-rock fans, this one is going to be a feast for your ears.

The track starts with a gradual ascent, background noises emerge before a bold drop with the drums striking while the iron is hot. Vocalist, Anastasia Grace Haunt takes over the airwaves with a salient and powerful vocal performance. Her brother, Maxamillion Haunt arrives mid-way through the track and adds to the haunting aura simmering in the background.

Meaning (My Interpretation)

Examining themes of solitude, discontent, and the destructive nature of a relationship, the track expresses a great degree of emotional turbulence. Hinting at an extreme numbness, The Haunt convey emotions of mental and emotional detachment (“My heart’s been on vacation”) and disengaged from their surroundings (“Disengaged in conversation”. Though it may not provide actual alleviation, the reference to “medication” points to an attempt to manage the inner suffering. Only temporary numbing.

Deterioration of the Relationship

“We’re going under” is repeated to highlight the deterioration of the relationship in which both people neglect to meet each other’s needs or comprehend one another. The singer feels invisible, as though their attempts at communication have little bearing (“You wanted everything at once, and you’re not listening”). As the songs imply—that the other person never regarded as sufficient—”You never thought I was enough”—this irritation mounts.
