Content Guide
Australian folk duo, The Dreggs have me hooked on their new track, “Stay The Night”. This infectious arrival from the group who formed in 2017 is ear candy with a vibe which whisks me away from the surroundings around me and to a place where I am truly immersed in the music.
Choppy Textures
The songs starts with an unorthodox introduction, the music which features acoustic guitar strums and a sturdy drum beat feels almost cut off ever so slightly and the choppy textures makes the track stand out ahead of a salient vocal delivery from Paddy Macrae.
Meaning (My Perspective)
The lyrics delivered by The Dreggs feature a raw vulnerability and nervous excitement that comes with the early stages of love and connection; something many of us including me can relate to. Also, throughout the song, there is a tension which I can feel and Paddy contemplates the uncertainty of how to navigate these powerful emotions on his own. The feeling of being on the brink of something meaningful is delivered well through the line “so nervous I’m shaking”. It is a lyric which is repeated often by Paddy. Moreover, it reflects how vulnerable we can sometimes feel when there is a lot to lose, especially within a relationship which feels so special.
Paddy’s feelings evolve into a deeper commitment as the song moves forward and he offers his heart, “always yours for the taking.” The lyrics “You could turn into us, you are more than enough” show a sense of longing and hope, as if Paddy is searching for reassurance that this connection can lead to something more. There’s an unspoken desire here to make the other person understand just how much they mean, despite the difficulty in expressing it.
