The Darkness continue to impress with new single, “I Hate Myself”. It follows on from where they left off with “The Longest Kiss” and it proves why many regard the group as one of the best rock bands to emerge out of the UK in recent decades.

Rock and Roll Opener

If you are a fan of proper rock and roll, then this one is going to be a feast for your ears. There is an old-school rock vibe present in the opener before it delves into a sound which you will find familiar if you are accustomed to the Darkness discography. Moreover, expect punchy guitar riffs, explosive drum strikes and high pitched vocals!

The Meaning (My Perception)

The song probes subjects of remorse and the fallout from one’s deeds. Justin Hawkins, the singer muses over the loss of a close relationship and notes that he treated someone he loved cruelly. The phrase “I hate myself” is repeated to underline the inner conflict and self-punishment people experience for their previous actions. Justin, laments his own incapacity to esteem the person he mistreated when he had the chance, realising too late their worth.

The track also addresses the concepts of self-awareness and the impossibility to run from the emotional fallout from one’s mistakes. Justin in the second stanza understands the depth of the love he lost and the fact the girl in issue understood him for who he really was, independent of their fortune or power. Justin is left with self-loathing and the knowledge that he pushed the person he loved away, and the awareness comes too late.
