Guide
Indie-pop singer Sydney Rose melts hearts with her new single, “5 More Minutes” taken from her new EP, “I Know What I Want” which was released on the 4th of April 2025. The song was produced by New York-based songwriter Sam Evian and it is a beautiful reflection on growing up too quickly.
Song Analysis (Sydney Rose)
“5 More Minutes” starts with a piano overture which to me shares close similarities to that of “Older” by Gracie Abrams. It is a beautiful start which continues to charm with the arrival of Sydney’s angelic vocals. Her voice is soulful and ethereal with tender tones leaking out of the mix and touching the ear like a whispered secret, soft and intimate, yet impossible to ignore. The song is in the key of E major and the acoustic textures pull me in and keep me fixated for the entirety.
Sydney Rose – “5 More Minuites” Lyrics
Verse 1
I can’t breathe
Or slow it down
Leah comes in
To get me back on the ground
Verse 2
It’s all I wanted
But not what I thought
I don’t dream
I just wish a lot
Chorus
I slide down
The snow in the backyard with my older brother
Then I come down
The stairs in my cap and gown to find my mother
I got so old so fast
Verse 3
My first love
Was my stuffed lamb
I’m twenty-one
With her still in my hands
Chorus
And I look up
To my dad and ask him to help me touch the sky
And I look up
Quizzes, “will I go to hell when I die?”
I got so old so fast
And I cannot go back

Outro
Five more minutes?
Just five more minutes, please
Five more minutes
God, just five more minutes, please?
Five more minutes
Just five more minutes
God, just five more minutes, please
Just five more minutes, please?
Meaning (My Opinion)
Sydney explores the difference between childhood innocence and the fast acceleration of growing up and becoming an adult. She reflects a great deal of nostalgia. Moreover, references to events like rolling down snow with an older brother and stepping down the stairs in a cap and gown mark significant turning points in her life, she is both happy and introspective. The line “I got so old so fast” suggests that Sydney is looking at how fast she has transitioned from childhood to maturity. Here, she captures the sensation of time’s speed and she implies that she wants to return to the simplicity of previous days; don’t we all?
The song also addresses emotional attachment and yearning and the mention of the stuffed lamb as a symbol of Sydney’s first love, still held close at twenty-one, conveys a sense of clinging to past comforts. Also, the repeated request for “five more minutes” in the outro signals a desire to slow down or pause time, to relive fleeting moments that are quickly slipping away. The combination of wanting for the past and the future generates an emotional tension that speaks to us all.
