Alt Rock Textures
American rock band, Sleep Theory knock me from my chair for all the right reasons with their new song “Static”. I wouldn’t consider this track metalcore myself but it certainly touches on that style with its alt-rock textures. It is explosive and everything I could have hoped for from the rising group.
Omnipotent
“Static” delves into many styles and genres and it has something for just about everybody. It starts with an omnipotent introduction, the guitars and drums driving the track forward with their vigorous momentum. The mood changes quickly, a dancey groove appears alongside the vocals from Cullen Moore who smashes it with his infectious hooks. The chorus is ear-candy with pop-rock style melodies leaking out of the mix before heading back into heavier territory with synths adding to the stereo-filling sound.
Meaning (My Perception)
The lyrics hit home with the feeling of being overwhelmed by the chaos that surrounds us. The song vividly depicts, in my view, the unavoidable continuous assault of noise and overstimulus which feels inescapable. It speaks to the internal struggle of trying to find peace amidst the chaos, whether it’s the relentless noise of our thoughts, the pressures of everyday life, or the outside world. The sense of losing control and the challenge of silencing that overwhelming static echoes a personal struggle many of us go through whereby the noise always manages to find its way back but louder and more consuming, despite how much we attempt to block it out.
The song also touches on the loneliness that can intensify the experience, especially when we’re alone with our thoughts. When the world inside our mind becomes too loud for us to control, we easily become lost; it feels distorted. Another point is that the continuous noise starts to erode our sense of reality and makes us doubt if it is all even real.
