Sierra Ferrell, the folk virtuoso stuns us with her charming new single, “The Garden”. This new track from the Charleston-born artist is everything we could have wanted from Sierra, yet more! It is track five on the album, “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds” and it is a breath of fresh air!
Trademark Vocal Tones
“The Garden” opens with a country meet bluegrass introduction and Sierra soon rises to the forefront of the speakers. She holds nothing back with her performance and gets straight into it with an angelic vocal performance. Her trademark vocal tones glide through the air and synergise well with acoustic guitar rhythms, subtle drum hits and slick guitar slides.
Meaning (My Perception)
Using the concept of a garden to mirror the cyclical character of relationships and human development, the song explores various themes of love, loss, resilience, and renewal. The garden also represents the vulnerability of love when it is ignored as well as the nurturing, work, and care needed to keep a relationship intact. Furthermore, the picture of harvest and decay in the first verse reflects the fragility of a relationship devoid of love and dedication. This underscores the need for love and protection to thrive. Additionally, the chorus reflects a sense of loss and longing, with Sierra lamenting the absence of a flourishing “garden” in their life, suggesting heartbreak and the yearning to rebuild what was lost.
The garden starts to represent optimism and rebirth as the song progresses. The second verse emphasises the grief of loss and the inability to rebirth without healing by acknowledging changing seasons and the salty tears unable to nurture the ground. The story changes in the third verse, though, as Sierra discovers fresh love and starts the process of seeds and soil care. This act to me signifies a rekindled belief in the potential for growth and the restoration of both love and self. The final chorus celebrates this transformation and Sierra joyfully is immersed in the metaphorical garden once again and she embraces the lessons learned from previous struggles.
