SAULT | “Pray For Me” | Single Review | 4/5

British group, SAULT are ticking all my boxes this month after discovering their track, “Pray For Me” which is track 9 on their “Acts Of Faith” album.

Ear-pleasing Introducing

The band who are known for merging various genres such as R&B, and urban contemporary gospel smash it here from the get-go with an ear-pleasing introduction with a warm piano arrangement sitting alongside radiating strings. The drums tap away, coming and going ahead of a salient vocal performance. The vocals stand out immediately and the power from singer, Cleo Sol can be felt through the speakers. She leaves nothing back with her delivery and her emotions leak out of the mix.

Meaning (My Perception)

After delving into the lyrics, I discovered various themes. Moreover, there is a focus on personal growth, resilience and faith. The singer reflects on how important it is to learn from the lessons which life teaches and throws at us. One lyric that really caught me was “You are my strength”. It suggests depending on someone or something which is greater. Most likely, it is an allusion to a higher power. This is thus a relationship not with another human but with a spiritual notion that gives strength under trying circumstances.

The chorus which repeats often, where the singer asks for prayer and more faith, highlights the vulnerability of the individual in the face of their personal journey. Also, there is a strong desire for transformation. But, there is an understanding that change is part of a larger plan and it cannot be rushed or even faked.
