Sabrina Carpenter Review: I would not call myself a diehard Sabrina Carpenter fan, especially when comparing my love for her music to what appears like half of social media. But, I am a sucker for a good old-fashioned pop hit and that is what “Busy Women” is, her new single which is out now.
Charming Pop (Sabrina Carpenter Review)
Charming pop is everywhere at the moment and female artists are flying high at the top of the game. Sabrina Carpenter is one of the few artists on the planet who cannot do anything wrong currently and she continues to be the flavour of the month (Or year) with this new arrival. It is a catchy release, and it reminds me of a little bit of Ariana Grande, I cannot find Ariana has a direct influence on Sabrina but it could easily have been written for Grande. The track features 80s-soaked drum fills and heavenly synth hooks.
E Minor Key (Sabrina Carpenter Review)
The chorus is everything you would expect from Sabrina with an ear-worm melody which will get stuck in your mind for days on end. The track is in the key of E minor too which gives it a melancholic feel too.
Meaning (My Perception)
For me, it appears that Sabrina is talking about emotional independence, self-worth, and personal boundaries, with a confident, unapologetic tone. The lyrics convey a woman (most likely Sabrina) who recognizes her own value, unapologetically asserting that she won’t settle for less than what she deserves. The phrase “I’m a busy woman” is to me a metaphor for her self-sufficiency and it reflects that she is prioritizing her own life and goals over the whims of others around her. Also, while expressing a willingness to be vulnerable and offer love, she is clear that this should not come at the expense of her sense of self-respect; something we should all take note of!
On a deeper more personal level, “Busy Women” also addresses the power dynamics which are found in relationships, especially around how vulnerability can be misused or even undervalued. The lyric “If you don’t need my love, well, I didn’t want your little bitch ass anyway” talks of a moment of defiance and it signals to me that she won’t chase after someone who doesn’t value her.
