‘Keep It Up’ by Rex Orange County – Single Rating: 5/5 ★★★★★
Grayshott born Rex Orange County leaps back to the forefront of indie with his new release, ‘Keep It Up’. The single is from his upcoming album, ‘Who Cares?’ which is due on the 11th of March.
It is hard not to find ourselves hooked on this forward-thinking versatile musician who rose to stardom in 2017 after appearing multiple times on Tyler, the Creators’ Flower Boy. He is in his own realm; furthermore, ‘Keep It Up’ combines heartbreaking words with an uplifting and optimistic instrumental. The juxtaposition of words and music makes us undecided about whether to smile with delight or cry into a tissue.
Strings drive the track ahead in ‘Keep It Up,’ which begins with a classical overture. You might think you’ve accidentally put on the wrong song at first, but don’t worry, you’re in the correct place, and Rex Orange County quickly returns to his signature sound, his voice snatching the spotlight with passion. He sings about self-worth and encourages everyone to stay loyal to themselves despite any hurdles that may arise along the path.
The mood changes dramatically when the vocals and strings are not present in the mix. Moreover, the drums tap away with a joyous cadence. Also, the guitar and piano tones foster a positive aura and, when paired with the lyrics, create an experience unlike any other; it’s an emotional rollercoaster ride!
