I have never truly delved into the depths of the Rex Orange County discography, you could class me more as a casual ROC listener. He is back and I have to say, I am really enjoying his new track “2008”. It is a song which wraps up summer 2024 with a bang and it is yet another indication that Rex Orange County has a bright future in the indie space.

Nostalgic Vibe

“2008” has a nostalgic quality, something which isn’t a huge shock given that it references a year almost two decades ago. This new track is a real gift and it will likely encourage a whole new line of admires for the 26-year-old from Grayshott in England. Although this is sometimes a surprise for many when they realise he is actually British, many are under the impression he is from the USA.

Music

The music is really well put together. The track starts with an almost reversed-sounding synth loop. An electronic drum rhythm then takes to the forefront with Rex Orange County also emerging with his signature high tones greeting our ears. He has a strong versatility when it comes to mixing up his vocal style, often switching between softer spoken high notes, to mid-level range vocal hooks. His singing style is highly refreshing and he stands out thanks to his unique approach.

Reflection

Rex Orange County looks back at his life in 2008 on this new release. Moreover, he speaks about being 10 years old and he reminisces about the easy life back then. Furthermore, he shares his experiences back then being in the garden, and often listening to Jay Z. It is likely that his story will resonate with anyone of a similar age, it certainly does for me, who is slightly older than the singer, real name Alex O’Connor.
