Regina Spektor beautifully whisks us off with the charming tones of her new release, “Samson”. One thing which is true for Regina Spektor is that she stuns me with each new arrival and this one is no exception! It is a heartfelt release that plucks at the heartstrings the moment that the track greets the ears.
Poignant Tones
“Samson” opens with poignant piano tones which glide through the air ahead of a salient and heavenly vocal delivery from Regina Spektor. It is easy to get lost in as the music serenades the ears with her angelic vocal range. It also has a warm quality which sends goosebumps across the body.
Meaning (My Perception)
Through a rereading of the Biblical tale of Samson and Delilah, Regina Spektor examines ideas of love, loss, and the passing of time. With the singer considering how their love, while very particular and important, seems to have been overlooked by history and even sacred texts, the songs centre on a relationship distinguished by great tenderness and emotional fragility. As Regina acknowledges the beauty and suffering of loving someone profoundly, the lyric “You are my sweetest downfall” deftly depicts the mixed nature of the relationship—something loved yet finally devastating.
From the act of chopping Samson’s hair to the reference to “old light” from the stars falling on their heads, the song’s complex symbolism emphasises the ephemeral character of their relationship and the passing of time. Samson’s physical decline—his hair falling out, his retreat back to bed, his consumption of Wonder Bread—indicates that once great and strong love has become nearly forgotten, almost ordinary. The biblical and historical references support the belief that, in the great story of life, their love—despite its intensity—was negligible.
