My Morning Jacket review: It is hard to believe that My Morning Jacket have been around since 1998, they still sound so fresh and their new track, “Squid Ink” is juice for thirsty rock fans, including me who is in love with this new arrival from the American band. The track is produced by Brendan O’Brien, who is known for his work with AC/DC, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Bruce Springsteen, among many, many more! His
A-Flat Major (My Morning Jacket Review )
In the key of A-flat major, the track has a warm, rich sound which will be candy for guitar fans. It starts as it means to conite and it also has a relative minor of F minor which gives it dark textures. The guitars play a central part of the song leading the song forward with powerful drum strikes giving the track a solid foundation and a tempo of around 156 BPM, this tempo is very common in this genre with other songs like “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen and “Don’t Stop Believin'” by Journey sharing a similar pace.
Meaning Of “Squid Ink” (My Perception)
The song explores ideas of endurance and the fight to release emotional weight. The repeated phrases “Say what you say! Mean what you mean!” and “Don’t ever, no, give in to fear” encourage authenticity and resilience in the face of challenge which is unforeseen. These lines also suggest that living with purpose and conviction is essential to fulfilment on a personal level. With “down in the squid ink too long,” an image comes to my mind that represents being caught in uncertainty and negativity—or even emotional gloom.
Additionally, “Squid Ink” touches on the lasting impact of memories and emotions which are left unresolved, particularly with the repeated line, “Why can’t I forget your face?” This repetition emphasises the difficulty of moving on from certain experiences or people and it reinforces the idea that emotional scars can linger around. The “squid ink” reference symbolizes obscurity and entanglement in difficult emotions. Moreover, Squid ink is often associated with darkness and concealment. Yet, the track also encourages self-determination; this is heard when singer Jim James sings “Don’t ever, no, give up your power.” He emphasises the need to learn to take control of one’s life, rather than giving in to despair.
