‘Change The Show‘ by Miles Kane – Single Rating: 4/5 ★★★★☆
Miles Kane has a lot of 60s and 70s rock and roll in his veins, so it’s no wonder that he’d put out a single like ‘Change The Show’, off his new album of the same name.
Furthermore, the singer-songwriter from Birkenhead has been naturally advancing to this stage in his career. His most recent releases have been steadily moving back in time; we heard it on ‘Coup De Grace’ in 2018 and on his Last Shadow Puppets project with Alex Turner. He’s also had an old-school British rock and roll quality up his sleeve for a long time, but never quite as much as this.
Vocal Style
‘Change The Show’ begins with a snappy percussion cadence and a fearless piano arrangement, both of which immediately draw us in! Miles suddenly jumps forward to the microphone, his T-Rex-like vocal style stealing the show. The vocals sound like they came out of the same studio as some of the biggest singles from the 1970s, to the point where if you rewind decades and drop this one, few people will believe it’s from 2022.
As passionate as ever, Miles cements his lyrical message with backing harmonies that reverberates throughout the mix. He talks about the need for change and the necessity for something fresh. There’s also a sense of resurgence here, with Miles unsure of which direction to go but eager to pursue revival. Given the tumultuous few years we’ve all had to go through, he’s probably not alone in his thinking.
