‘Formentera’ by Metric – Album Rating: 4/5 ★★★★☆
Metric, the Canadian rock band, reintroduces their varied sound on their latest album, ‘Formentera’. The group that came together in 1998 smash it with this eighth studio album; it does not disappoint!
Naming the album after the sunny Spanish Balearic island, the band said that they saw the name of the nation in a travel guide while they were in a studio in Toronto. It became a dream destination that seemed so far away, given that their recording sessions took place at the height of COVID travel restrictions.
Only nine tracks make up ‘Formentera’, falling just short of the traditional 10–12 songs, but there is still plenty to keep us hooked! It begins with ‘Doomscroller’. The intensity hits us immediately as the song launches into a riveting space with a pounding pace and tense vocals from frontwoman Emily Haines. The track develops with breathtaking layers, and the dreamy synth in the middle section takes us on a journey.
Five tracks into the record, ‘Enemies Of The Ocean’, radiates with its vibrant texture. The blend serenades the ears and combines unconventional components with the most captivating electronic hooks. With Emily’s euphoric vocal, the song is easy to get lost in, and it is the perfect escape! The album’s concluding song, ‘Paths In The Sky’, perfectly wraps everything up with an instantly thrilling movement!
