American rapper Kanye West receives lawsuit stating that he is unable to retire.
This has come off the back of Kanye trying to free himself from his record and publishing contracts. However the lawsuit points to a provision in his EMI publishing contract that forbids him from not working.
The statement states, “You (Mr. West) hereby represent and warrant that to [EMI] that You will, throughout the Term as extended by this Modification, remain actively involved in writing, recording and producing Compositions and Major Label Albums, as your principle occupation. At no time during the Term will you seek to retire as a songwriter, recording artist or producer or take any extended hiatus during which you are not actively pursuing your musical career in the same basic manner as You have pursued such career to date. (The preceding representation shall not be deemed to prevent you from taking a vacation of limited duration.)”
Furthermore, Kanye West who is now 41 years of age has had a long and successful career since he broke onto the music scene in the late 1990s. He has gone onto achieve global success and received countless number one hits. As a result, you would expect Kanye to want to slow things down and ease into retirement. However with this lawsuit, it does not appear that Kanye West has that option.
