James Bay has the ability to mix up his style of music and that is what I really like about him as an artist. If you search through his discography, you will likely come across a lot of mainstream pop-sounding hits, but dig deeper and you will find a lot of really great secrets too! One of them is his new single “Easy Distraction”.

James Bay and The Killers

“Easy Distraction” has a vibe akin to that of The Killers. But, hold fire, there is a reason for that! Moreover, this track was actually co-written by Brandon Flowers, the frontman for The Killers and I have to say, I love it! I personally think James Bay is best when he is letting his edgier side out and the rock tones from this are pleasing to my ears and just what I needed.

Indie-Rock Style

The track gets underway as it means to continue with an uplifting indie-rock introduction. The drums kick us in with the guitars smashing through the mix with vigour. James Bay soon takes the spotlight with a powerful and effective vocal performance. The music has a catchy undercurrent with the drums incorporating a syncopated style. The chorus arrives with a bang! When the chorus steps up, you would likely realise that Brandon Flowers is also behind this track without us even telling you.

James’ Style

James Bay still manages to create his own style here. Yes, there are many styles which are similar to that of The Killers and other indie bands. But, he brings his own qualities to the performance and for me, it stands out in the scene today. It is also refreshing to see him lean further into the rock space and I really hope he continues down this route.
