‘Comments’ by Iggy Pop – Single Rating: 4/5 ★★★★☆
‘Comments’ the third single from Iggy Pop is the latest from his 19th studio album ‘Every Loser’, and at 75 he is sounding fresher than ever. Pop himself admits it is a surprise that he made it to 65.
The album title ‘Every Loser’ is quoted within the lyrics of ‘Comments’. It is a track that does not shy away from taking a blatant lyrical swipe at online trolls. Also, general negativity that the internet can sometimes bring.
Produced and released through Andrew Watt’s Gold Touch Records, any new Iggy Pop project will always attract musical collaborators of the highest quality seeking involvement. The players on ‘Comments’ are no exception. Ex- Chilli Peppers guitar Josh Klinghoffer contributes on synths, and Jane’s Addiction bassist Eric Avery also performs.
Taylor Hawkins
But a special mention is needed here as the late, great Taylor Hawkins appears on ‘Comments’. Also, not only on drums, percussion, and piano – but also picking up a writing credit on the track. What a talent – gone far too soon.
‘Comments’ intro kicks off with Avery’s bass riff solo, accompanied shortly after by Johnny Marr-esque sounding guitar strums. But it’s Pop’s unique vocal drawl and delivery that sucks you into the track. Also, while he is busy telling us to ‘sell your stock Zuckerburg and run’, the song really gets going underpinned by Hawkin’s superb drumming.
The chorus hook, and the catchiest part of ‘Comments’ is very much down to Klinghoffer’s synths, and the slick production, Iggy Pop’s ‘get you thinking’ lyrics, mixed with some of the best players in the business, that gives the song uniqueness and a touch of real class that’s missing from a lot of releases these days.
What Iggy Pop has to say now is arguably more relevant than ever before. The ‘Godfather of Punk’ has done it again.
