‘Anyway’ by Gabrielle Aplin – Single Rating: 4/5 ★★★★☆
Gabrielle Aplin in 2023 sounds like someone that is now liberated. She is truly now an independent artist, self-releasing her fourth LP ‘Phosphorescent’ entirely through her own label Never Fade Records.
‘Anyway’, the latest single from ‘Phosphorescent’, heavily hints at the songwriter’s self-reflection with an honest and heavy hint of regret, rolled in to one of the catchiest pop songs you will hear for quite some time. Think a mix of Joss Stone and peak late 90’s Natalie Imbrugila – but better.
‘Anyway’ opens with a familiar sounding but lovely piano lick. Also, the overall musicianship on the track is a real highlight. Subtle and dampened guitar stabs, soulful bass parts, and gospel influenced backing vocals all contribute to a song that after a couple of listens you will find yourself madly humming the chorus to yourself repeatedly. ‘Anyway’ is so delightfully catchy.
Despite most of the album coming about during the second 2021 lockdown, ‘Anyway’ is musically cheerful track. Also, the Ying and Yang feel works complemented by Aplin’s pretty angry and honest lyrics. It very much is a ‘wearing your heart on you sleeve’ type of record and that’s rare.
It’s not really any surprise, but Aplin’s lead vocals on ‘Anyway’ are beautiful. Her voice has so much subtle soul, a remarkable voice to listen to with melt your heart ad-libs.
Over her decade long musical career, Gabrielle Aplin has gathered over a billion streams. She burst onto the scene in November 2012, through a John Lewis backed cover of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s ‘Power of Love’. That cover is something that Aplin should be proud of.
‘Phosphorescent’ is due to land in the top 10 this week, and that’s something that she should be prouder of – richly deserved.
