Freak Slug Review | “Killer” | Single Review | 4/5

Freak Slug review: I will be honest, I had never heard of Freak Slug until I came across her new single, “Killer” from her recently released album, “I Blow Out Big Candles (But with a Cherry on Top)” which dropped on the 7th of March 2025. Ever since I hit play, I have been hooked like a cat on a laser pen.

About Freak Slug

Freak Slug whose real name is Xenya Genovese is from Manchester in the United Kingdom and from what I can work out, she only started releasing back in 2021. Her rapid ascent in the indie/ rock scene has evidently been due to her edgy approach to music mixed in with her influence that stems from 90s cult icons.

Song Analysis of “Killer” (Freak Slug Review)

The song starts with a guitar chord arrangement, the strums are subtle ahead of the arrival of Freak Slug who begins singing the chorus with a softly spoken talking style and an 80s almost preset-sounding drum beat emerges which gives the track a pace of around 107 bpm, a comparable speed to tracks like “Nite Lite” by Knitting and “Since April” by girlpuppy. The vibe changes around the 45-second mark, everything becomes deeper and more explosive with the sounds coming together to create a huge wall of sound, here we delve into a psychedelic space. Although the vocals play a big role in the song, it is fair to say that there is a strong emphasis on the instrumental.

Meaning (My Opinion) (Freak Slug Review)

The repeated phrase “You’re a killer” appears to represent someone who has done something terrible or destructive, this could be emotionally, physically, or even psychologically. The word “nasty” also emphasises negativity and moral judgement about the activities carried out by a certain person. The words convey a sense of disgust or disappointment too, emphasising that the individual’s actions are not acceptable and certainly not admirable. To me, this could be regarded as a remark on people who act carelessly in life or without thinking about the result of their actions.

In the verse, Freak Slug expresses a sense of being watched. She possibly implies guilt or worry over her own behaviour. Driving away could represent a desire to avoid responsibilities or guilt. The second verse cautions against ignorance, saying, “Don’t be stupid ’cause you don’t see it,” this emphasises that one’s choices always have consequences in some way or another. The lyrics also communicate a sense of accountability for oneself and Freak Slug encourages us all not to blame others but to accept responsibility for our own actions even though this may be tough.
