‘Wake Me Up‘ by Foals – Single Rating: 4/5 ★★★★☆
Foals’ latest track, ‘Wake Me Up’, is dripping with feel-good indie flavours. Furthermore, the alt-rockers new single is everything you’d expect from a band of their calibre.
The drum’s cadence instantaneously shapes the hips. It’s the kind of sound you’d want to hear in a disco, one that will lift your mood. The band’s intensity is palpable, and they don’t hold back with their distinctive hooks, which grabs our attention once more.
Yannis Philippakis, the band’s frontman, is as vibrant as ever, delivering a performance that displays his talent as one of the most influential indie-rock vocalists of our day. He’s grown as a vocalist over the years, and on this track, his confidence reaches new heights. His method is comparable to that of past songs, even dating back to their early days, but he adds a unique aura that makes a lasting impression for the right reasons.
‘Wake Me Up’, lyrically, is about the band’s experiences during COVID-19 lockdowns. They express their longing for independence and look forward to the day when they can travel the world once more. It’s a thought-provoking storey that many will relate to, especially given the previous unprecedented years we’ve all had to suffer.
Foals have wowed us here in general! It’s incredible to hear them experimenting creatively, and given their turmoil following the departure of bassist Walter Gervers, they’ve risen to the situation admirably!
