‘Over’ by CHVRCHES – Single Rating: 4/5 ★★★★☆
‘Over’ marks a new era for CHVRCHES. It is the first record to be released signed to the world-famous Island Records, and surely more exciting new music from the band not too far away on the horizon. If ‘Over’ gives you a taste of what’s to come, then their next LP will no doubt be something special.
‘Over’ is a dynamic and catchy track that showcases the Scottish synth- pop band’s signature sound. The song begins with a pulsating beat that is very Prince and builds momentum. Lauren Mayberry’s lead vocals are truly addictive, it’s a brilliant vocal performance – pretty much as per usual. The chorus is anthemic, with a lovely chord changes and strong synths pushing the beat. The male backing vocals bring another bit of good texture to the track and there is a bit of good old fashioned jangly guitar buried deeper in the final mix. ‘Over’ is unashamedly and amazingly 80’s in style and sound. If you like Don Henley’s ‘Boys Of Summer’, the overall soundtrack of Stranger Things and the movie ‘Drive’, you will like this.
Ten Years Since Debut
CHVRCHES have been around longer than you think. Also, it’s crazy to think that they released their debut album ten years ago. ‘Over’ marks Scottish bands first release since 2021’s critically acclaimed ‘Screen Violence’ and two years has been too long. They are very, very mutually well respected in the industry, and have collaborated with everyone from the likes of Marshmello, Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame, and even The Cure’s Robert Smith.
‘Over’ could be the start of an amazing 2023 as the band gear up for their Glastonbury slot in June. Also, you cannot help but think any forthcoming album from the band will be their biggest yet. ‘Over’ is just the start. ‘Indietronica’ is back with a bang baby!
