‘Every Rule’ by Charli XCX – Single Rating: 4/5 ★★★★☆

Charli XCX returns in fast succession, following up her last hit, ‘Baby’, with her new single, ‘Every Rule.’ The song is off the popstar’s latest album, ‘Crash,’ which came out on March 18th. It’s potentially the singer’s most compelling release yet, with Charli wearing her heart firmly on her sleeve for the duration.

The speakers spew nostalgia as soon as ‘Every Rule’ begins. The single’s feel is relevant to the contemporary scene; it fits in like a glove with the chart as it is today. Furthermore, the synth has an 80s texture and seamlessly blends with Charli XCX’s vocal performance, which has a current and 2022 character. It’s incredible that this is the case, given that ‘Every Rule’ is one of the oldest tunes on the ‘Crash’ album and was recorded before other tracks on the ‘Crash’ album.

Vocally. Charli XCX is a delight, as one would anticipate, given her impressive skill set! She showcases her ability as a vocalist and storyteller with a performance that deviates from her norm. Furthermore, she sings with a more pop aesthetic here, and she tries out several vocal approaches, exploring vocally and impressing with heaps of melisma within her delivery. Her exploration pays off tremendously, and each note re-energizes and pulls us further into her world.
