Chappell Roan – “The Giver” Review: Girl Goes Country [4/5]

Kayleigh Rose Amstutz who goes by the name Chappell Roan can do little wrong in my eyes at the moment. Her new single, “The Giver” also ventures into new territory for the pop star, widely known for “Pink Pony Club”. Released officially on the 14th of March via Amusement Records, this one is quite a treat, here I take a deep dive.

Song Analysis

Never one to shy away from something new, Chappell Roan explores a newfound country style here. It starts in real country style too with a violin arrangement greeting the ear atop a mainstream pop-esque beat. It is quite the fusion and one to get lost in! The song has a pace of around 118 bpm and it is in the key of C# Major. The chorus as you would expect from Chappell Roan is as infectous as her last and she creates an impact with her salient vocal delivery.

Meaning (My Opinion)

The lyrics tackle themes of confidence, self-assurance, and openly accepting one’s place in relationships. The image of “mating calls” and “antlers on my walls” exemplifies Chappell’s fun yet unabashed approach to romantic interactions, allowing her to easily traverse the world of dating and attraction. The continuous assurance of “I get the job done” also demonstrates pride in meeting expectations and taking control of the issue at hand. This not only refers to personal empowerment, but also to a deeper awareness of human connection too, in which Roan’s abilities go beyond superficial trappings such as physical attractiveness or material things in life; something I am sure she is in abundance of now due to her worldwide fame.

The lyrics also question established gender norms, as Chappell’s confidence goes against the grain of the classic “country” image. In the second verse, the line ‘I don’t need no lifted truck / Revvin’ loud to pick you up’ challenges the notion that masculinity and appeal necessitate flamboyant displays. Instead, Chappell’s confidence is based on inner attributes like charm, touch, and the capacity to make an impression in an apparently humdrum place. Finally, the song emphasises that Roan is both a “giver” and a “deliverer,” someone who can get things done without the need for pretence, providing a novel perspective on how to approach attraction and relationships with honesty and simplicity.
