Ever gotten drunk and vowed to do something but it never materialised? Well that’s not the case for DJ Michael Savage, who will play US rock band Toto’s classic hit Africa on loop all night at a music venue in Bristol. That’s right, all night long.
“I drunkenly suggested I’d run a night playing just that track two years ago. I kept talking about it and now I’ve got to do it,” Mr. Savage admitted.
The event will take place at The Exchange in Bristol on 30 November and visitors will get to experience the iconic eighties track for “five hours straight”. The idea is that people can get sponsored for how long they can last and this would certainly be no mean feat.
The band members of Toto were quick to respond to the news with founding member Steve Lukather tweeting:
“This could be worse than waterboarding !! lol
I mean WTF is going on with this tune?
I mean its been GREAT for us in many ways but we recorded this as a deep cut track in 1981. NO idea what it would become! ( pun intended)
You think YOU are sick of it? But ..it’s a gift now.”
Money raised from the fundraising event will be donated to the Bristol-based charity Temwa, whose work helps to reduce poverty in Malawi and “develop self-sufficient communities” in remote rural areas of the country’s north.
Whilst the original song will play uninterrupted in the venue’s main room between 23:00 and 04:00, covers and remixes of the tune will be played in the neighboring bar.
“I love the track, it’s unusual – the ultimate guilty pleasure – but I’m not sure whether I’ll fall asleep or not,” Michael Savage commented.
DJ Savage is championing for an even longer extension of the five hour set in the hope of creating a new world record.
“I’m pushing for longer. I’ve asked the venue for 12 hours,” he said.
“I’d like to set a new world record. I don’t think there is one for this as far as I can tell but that’s the plan.”
Good luck to the bar staff, we salute you.
