‘SUCKERby Blood Red Shoes – Single Rating: 3/5 ★★★★☆

Blood Red Shoes have a knack for grabbing our attention, and their latest track, ‘SUCKER’, is no exception.

Drawing us into their indie realm, the Brighton pair explore with their signature sound, fusing it with an 80s ambience that is difficult to resist! The new track starts with a dreamy synth intro. It sets the path for a monstrous guitar riff that slaps the chops with its infectious tonal richness.

Laura-Mary Carter, the frontwoman, enters the mix quickly. She hits the ground running with a vocal performance that raises the hair on the back of the neck to new heights. She has an ethereal aspect to her voice while simultaneously remaining gritty and present in the soundscape created by the instrument. Meanwhile, Steven Ansell uses a foot-tapping drum pattern to solidify and glue everything together.

Dynamism

A bold piano explodes out of the mix as the track progresses, adding a new dynamism to the experience. Also, towards the end, the music takes a step back, and an electronic drum sample taps away before the two-piece give it another push and finish it off with true excellence.

However, one obvious thing is that the tempo never really picks up. Moreover, it feels like some punch is missing here, and a faster tempo as it progressed would have worked wonders; mainly because it sounds like we’re going to get a HUGE stadium-filling hook along the way.
