‘Sex Magik’ by Bloc Party – Single Rating: 3/5 ★★★☆☆
‘Sex Magik’ by Bloc Party sparks enormous enthusiasm among their devoted fan base. We’ve long been fans of the band, who took the world by storm in 2005 with their powerful debut album ‘Silent Alarm’. But fast forward to now, and we’re still unsure what to make of this new release.
There’s something about ‘Sex Magik’ that doesn’t quite hit us with impact. Furthermore, it is almost as if it’s a jam session idea that the band rushed out. The drumbeat is classic Bloc Party, and it’s refreshing to hear new drummer Louise Bartle continue on the mood that Matt Tong first brought until his departure in 2013. However, the cadence does not blend in well with the plethora of other sounds that emerge, particularly Kele Okereke’s vocal melody; it almost sounds as if every member is in their own space yet manage to make it work when fused together.
Experimental
Bloc Party’s music has always been experimental, and their structures rarely follow a generic pattern; it’s what makes them such a wonderful group and one of the reasons so many people love them! ‘Sex Magik’, on the other hand, does not feel as natural or thrilling as past work. Could it be that the industry has developed and shifted in some way since the band’s inception? Or are the band just pushing a little too hard to go back to where they once were, thus losing new potential energy?
