I have always been a fan Billie Eilish and it is great to see her unveiling a deeper, introspective side to her music on new track “What Was I Made For?” Here, she teams up once again with FINNEAS to deliver a track that beautifully contrasts with the upbeat nature of the Barbie movie’s soundtrack. The track is the seventh single for the movie and Billie’s Instagram announcement confirmed her involvement as one of the mystery artists.

Personal Struggles

The lyrics for the song delve into Billie’s struggles personally with finding her purpose and passion in life. They also resonate with Barbie’s own experiences in the full length movie. Furthermore, Billie channels her previous buoyancy which is now uncertainty. Lyrics reflect this such as “I used to float, now I just fall down” and “Takin’ a drive, I was an ideal … so alive, turns out I’m not real”.

Billie’s style which is now her trademark shines through instantly on this track, prioving the immense talent that shot her up to the top of the charts in such a short span of time. Nevertheless, there is a newfound maturity in this track, indicating her growth as a modern artist. Also, still at only 21 years of age, it is quite obvious that she has a long and exciting career ahead.

The vocals from Billie, as always, are a delight to my ears. She delivers her tones beautifully, at times almost whispering, it really feels personal. However, she manages to evoke an astonishing amount of power with her limited breath. This delicate balance between vulnerability and strength resonates deeply, drawing us further into the track.

So, ready for the new release by Billie Eilish? You can take a listen here.
