Directed by Jon Favreau, this remake will reimagine the 1994 Disney classic. Beyoncé debuted a cast poster on Instagram earlier this month. The new Lion King is labeled as a live-action CGI film. The film is set to release on July 19, 2019 in the United States.

What exactly is a live-action CGI film one might ask? This questions isn’t new in the animation and visual effects community. The recent Jungle Book movie also by Favreau provides a similar arrangement and combination of live action and CGI.

The Lion King ’s VFX supervisor Rob Legato shared some details of the film although it is still under wraps. Legato offered at National Association of Broadcasters, “We are going to use a lot of virtual reality tools so it feels akin to what you are looking at [if you were on a real set]. You can walk around the set like a cameraman. [Wearing VR headsets] the actors can now walk into a scene and see the other actors and trees … and because you are in 3D, you get a realistic sense [of the environment]. That’s what we are incorporating in the next version of this.”

However, we know that there will be an abundant amount of music. Hans Zimmer is handling the score originally written by Elton John. Beyoncé and Donald Glover who are leading roles will be providing vocals along with the other cast members. Beyoncé’s character Nala, befriends Sima and becomes his partner in fighting against Scar, his evil uncle.

Billy Eichner was excited when hearing that he was cast for his role as Timon. “I was freaking out,” Eichner told the E! who gets to sing ‘Hakuna Matata’ with Seth Rogen.

Walt Disney Studios said: “We can officially confirm that The Walt Disney Studios and director Jon Favreau are putting a new re-imagining of The Lion King on the fast track to production.”
